Payroll Activity
You are the payroll clerk for the Boulevard of Broken Dreams Cafe. You will need to complete this week's payroll accurately and in a timely manner. Your deadline will be set by your "boss" (a.k.a. your teacher).
You will need to turn in the following:
- Completed payroll register of the weekly payroll for the pay period ending 3/22/xx. (Chapter 12)
- Completed cash payments journal depicting the correct salary entry to record payroll. (13-1)
- Completed general journal depicting the correct entry for payroll taxes incurred by the employer. (13-2)
Rules
- You MUST work alone on this activity. Any sharing of information will be considered cheating and will result in a ZERO.
- You may ONLY use your books and Excel as your resources.
- You may use the electronic Excel forms (linked above) or use extra paper forms from your workbook.
- You must submit the three documents when the assignment is complete.
- You will need to use the federal employer's withholding schedule online to determine how much taxes to withhold from each employee for federal income tax. Here is the link: IRS WEBSITE. The table in the book will not work since our payroll is calculated on a weekly basis and the book displays a semi-monthly payroll.
- Your assignment will be graded as either correct or not correct (100% or 0%). In the real world, you will either have a job or be fired. So be sure your numbers are accurate.
- Tax percentages to use are as follows: Social Security - 6.2%, Medicare - 1.45%, Unemployment-Federal - 0.8%, and Unemployment-State - 5.4%.
- Unemployment taxes will be calculated only on earnings for the current pay period that have not reached $7,000 for the calendar year.
