Event Description

(DDA)

A pair of students acts out an 8 minute cutting from a play, using only a table and two chairs

(HDA)

A pair of students acts out an 8 minute cutting from a play, using only a table and two chairs

(DI)

Individual students present an 8 minute cutting from a serious play, performing multiple characters by using changes in voice, facial expression, stance, and gestures.

(HI)

Individual students present an 8 minute cutting from a serious play, performing multiple characters by using changes in voice, facial expression, stance, and gestures.

(Extemp)

In this event, students prepare a 6 minute speech addressing a question related to a current events topic. Participants keep organized files of news articles from which they use during their 45 minute preparation time before performing.

(Impromptu)

Students are given 8 total minutes to both prepare and perform a speech about a topic they select upon entering the room at competition -- topics generally range from a famous person or event, to a quote, to an interesting word or phrase.

(DEC)

Students memorize an 8 minute speech written by someone else, and perform it as if it were their own

(OO)

Students write and memorize an 8 minute, researched, persuasive speech on any topic of importance.

(OC)

Students write and memorize an 8 minute comedy routine, complete with multiple characters and pantomime.

(SOS)

Students pretend to address a specific audience, informing and entertaining them about a topic relevant to that audience's interests. The speech is 8 minutes long, memorized, and polished.

(Prose)

Students prepare an 8 minute cutting from a novel or short story, and read from the text using interpretive skill.

(Verse)
Students prepare an 8 minute program of poetry united by theme or author, and read from the text using interpretive skill.
(Radio)
Students prepare a 5 minute news broadcast of that day's news, and present it via headsets to listening judges.
