Scheduling
- 40 hours are in a standard work week. (Overtime pay (1 1/2 times normal rate) begins after 40 hours of work in one week.)
- Job sharing exists when two employees share one job. This usually decreases absenteeism and increases employee satisfaction.
- Flexible work week is when employees are allowed to select their own hours of work, as long as they complete their 40 hours within the week.
- Compressed work week is when employees work their standard 40 hours but in less than five days (4 ten hour work days instead of 5 eight hour days).
Pay rewards
- Salary is a set amount paid to employees, regardless of the hours worked.
- Commission is a percentage of sales made. For instance employees may earn 3% of any sales they make.
- Piece-rate system is when employees are paid for the number of items produced. For instance, an employee may earn $ 1 for every 50 envelopes they stuff. Therefore, the more they stuff, the more they make.
Recruiting/Employee movement
Rrecruiting involves determing what jobs are needed, what skills are needed to fill that job, attracting and selecting the right candidates (whether theya re within or outside the company), and hiring/ifiring employees.
Training
- Apprenticeship is when employees work side by side an experienced employee (usually in a craft or trade position).
- On-the-job is when employees learn by doing the job with actual customers and equipment, guided by the trainer.
Legality
- OSHA – Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets guideslines for safety at the work place.
- Affirmative action is a program that encouraged employers to seek out women and minority job applicants.
- ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act discourages discrimination of and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for those with disabilities.
Benefits
- Fringe benefits are non-monetary rewards for employees to attract and maintain good workers. Examples includeinclude: sick leave, vacation pay, health plans, pension plans, discounts.
